Can I refinance my house while unemployed?

Can I refinance my home while I don't have a job? I was recently laid off, but I would like to lower my monthly mortgage payment.

Banks for the most part will not allow you to refinance your mortgage if you are unemployed. Without proof that you can pay back the loan, there is too much risk involved for lenders to consider.

However, an option you may be able to consider is a no documentation loan. These loans are used mostly for self employed persons that do not have a steady income, and so the process relies on your assets and credit history rather than your employment.

These loans do cost more, but can be a viable option if you are looking for help.
