Term noting the market cap, decided on the index of stocks that have been traded on the London Stock Exchange. Usually referring to as the Financial Times Stock Exchange 100 stock index. This is quite similar to the American S&P 500.

Term sounds like FTSE, referring to the group that adds thousands upon thousands of indices of the market performances on a daily basis. The first was calculated in 1984, the FTSE 100. This stock index held the 100 biggest companies in the London Stock Exchange according to market capitalization. FTSE 100 composition is gathered quarterly. The Group assumed independently in 1995. It stemmed from a joint operation of the London Stock Exchange and the Financial Times. What began just as a UK centered organization now covers worldwide markets. The group has 8 offices all around the world and has led the development of the very first standardized system of classification, called the FTSE Global Classification System.
